Home EV chargers, home batteries and bidirectional EVs
The gear behind the home tools, with specs from the manufacturers and honest notes on what's actually for sale. Prices are 2026 list or typical installed figures, and change often.
Home EV chargers
- Tesla Universal Wall Connector: Wall box, 48 A, NACS with built-in J1772 adapter. Hardwired 48 amp wall box with a Tesla plug and a J1772 adapter that swings out. Charges nearly anything sold in the US.
- ChargePoint Home Flex: Wall box, 50 A, J1772 or NACS. Adjustable from 16 to 50 amps. Plug it in at 40 or hardwire it for the full 50.
- Emporia Pro EV Charger: Wall box, 48 A, J1772 or NACS. The cheap way around a full panel. It watches the whole house and turns itself down when the dryer and the oven are running.
- United Chargers Grizzl-E Classic: Wall box, 40 A, J1772. A metal box with no app and no opinions. Schedule charging from the car instead.
- United Chargers Grizzl-E Ultimate 48: Wall box, 48 A, J1772 or NACS. The same tank of a box, hardwired at 48 amps, with an app bolted on.
- Autel MaxiCharger AC Elite Home 50A: Wall box, 50 A, J1772. Fifty amps hardwired, with load balancing if you add the meter.
- Wallbox Pulsar Plus: Wall box, 48 A, J1772 or NACS. Small, tidy, and does load management if you buy the meter.
- Tesla Mobile Connector: Portable cord, 32 A, NACS. The cord that lives in the frunk. At 32 amps on a 14-50 it covers most commutes.
- Ford Mobile Power Cord: Portable cord, 30 A, J1772. Two plugs in one bag: the wall outlet at the in-laws, and the dryer-style outlet at home.
- GM Energy PowerShift Charger + V2H Enablement Kit: Bidirectional, 80 A, J1772 (CCS1 inlet vehicles). The charger plus the kit that lets a GM Ultium truck or SUV run the house in an outage. Includes the Home Hub switch and a small battery to restart things in the dark.
- Tesla Universal Wall Connector + Powershare Gateway: Bidirectional, 48 A, NACS. The Cybertruck's home backup setup. Works alongside Powerwall 3 since September 2026.
- Wallbox Quasar 2 + Power Recovery Unit: Bidirectional, 48 A, CCS1 (DC). A DC bidirectional charger, so the power conversion happens in the box instead of the car. Kia EV9 for now.
- dcbel Ara: Bidirectional, None A, CCS1 or CHAdeMO (DC). A DC bidirectional charger with a solar inverter inside. Supports the Volvo EX90, Polestar 3 and Nissan Leaf so far, mostly in California.
- Ford Charge Station Pro: Bidirectional, 80 A, J1772. The original V2H charger for the F-150 Lightning. No longer sold. Owners who have one are still supported.
Home batteries
- Tesla Powerwall 3: 13.5 kWh, 11.5 kW continuous. The default answer. Big inverter for its size, so one unit can start a central air conditioner.
- Tesla Powerwall 3 Expansion: 13.5 kWh, 0 kW continuous. More kilowatt-hours, no more kilowatts. It has no inverter, so it adds hours of backup, not the ability to run more at once.
- FranklinWH aPower 2: 15 kWh, 10 kW continuous. Fifteen kWh per box and a gateway that handles generators and whole-home backup. Stacks absurdly high.
- Enphase IQ Battery 10C: 10 kWh, 7.08 kW continuous. Modular and tidy, especially with Enphase solar. Needs two units, or a soft starter, for most central air.
- Enphase IQ Battery 5P: 5 kWh, 3.84 kW continuous. Small building blocks. Fine for essentials. You will need a stack of them to run the whole house.
- SolarEdge Home Battery 400V: 9.7 kWh, 5 kW continuous. For homes that already have SolarEdge solar. Essentials-sized per unit.
- LG Home 8: 14.4 kWh, 7.5 kW continuous. A big AC-coupled box. LG doesn't publish a surge figure, so check it before counting on it to start the air conditioner.
- sonnen sonnenCore+: 10 kWh, 4.8 kW continuous. Long-life cells and a small inverter. An essentials battery unless you stack it.
- EcoFlow DELTA Pro Ultra + Smart Home Panel 2: 6.1 kWh, 7.2 kW continuous. A portable power station that can be wired into the house. Extra packs add hours, not power: one inverter tops out at 7.2 kW. Shorter warranty, and you can take it camping.

Panel helpers: load managers, splitters and smart panels
- RVE DCC-12 load controller: Whole-house load manager. A gray box that switches the charger off when the house gets close to its limit. Not clever, but it works with any charger and has done this job in Quebec for years.
- simpleSwitch 240-M with clamp-on sensors: Whole-house load manager. The cheapest whole-house watchdog here. It does not slow the car down, it just turns it off until the oven is done.
- Tesla Remote Meter (Dynamic Power Management): Charger add-on meter. If you already own a Wall Connector, this is the cheapest way to make it panel-aware. When it is in stock.
- Wallbox Power Meter 250A (Power Boost): Charger add-on meter. Teaches a Pulsar Plus to back off when the air conditioner kicks on. Only works with Wallbox chargers.
- Enphase IQ EV Charger 2 (main breaker protection): Charger with load management built in. Makes sense if you already have Enphase solar and a Gateway. Without one, you are buying a small ecosystem to charge a car.
- Schneider Electric Schneider Charge (SmartAmp): Charger with load management built in. A charger with the sensors in the box and the UL 3141 listing inspectors increasingly ask for.
- NeoCharge Smart Splitter (dryer outlet, 14-30 or 10-30): Smart splitter. Shares the dryer outlet with the car and pauses the car when the dryer runs. Some utilities have rebated it.
- NeoCharge Smart Splitter (50 A outlet, 14-50 or 6-50): Smart splitter. Mostly sold for two cars on one 14-50. How it behaves with a range on the other side is not something the maker spells out.
- Splitvolt Splitter Switch (14-30 or 10-30): Smart splitter. Same idea as NeoCharge, a few dollars cheaper and no app.
- simpleSwitch Model 240 (50 A circuit sharing): Hardwired circuit sharing. The permanent, inspector-friendly version of a splitter: a box on the wall instead of a plug behind the dryer.
- BSA Electronics Dryer Buddy Plus (14-30): Manual splitter. The original version: you flip a switch. Works until someone forgets and the laundry sits there damp.
- SPAN SPAN Panel (MAIN 32): Smart panel. The full replacement: a new panel where every breaker answers to your phone. Often costs more than the upgrade you were avoiding, but you get something for it.
- Lumin Smart Panel with Panel Guard: Panel add-on. Smart-panel control without ripping out the panel you have.
- Leviton Smart breakers + Whole Home Energy Monitor: Smart breakers. The cheapest way into a smart panel if you already have a Leviton one. Leviton does not sell it as automatic EV load management, so it will not help you skip an upgrade.
- Savant Power System (modules + Power Director): Smart breakers. The smart-home company’s take on the smart panel. Good if you are already a Savant house, a lot of dealer otherwise.
